Sector movers: Mining, travel and construction weigh
The mining sector provided a big weight on London's stock indices on Tuesday, along with housebuilders and travel stocks.
Miners were all in the red due to copper prices sliding for the third day, pressured by Trump comments.
The tourism and leisure sector was in the shade too, after tour operator Thomas Cook withdrew its dividend and cut its annual profits guidance for the third time this year. Trading is still not back to full strength in the new financial year either, with bookings for the coming winter down 3% on last year and a "mixed start" to for summer 2019, with the UK source market appearing solid but Northern and Continental Europe more mixed.
FTSE 100 peer TUI was also on the back foot, while easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air were also in the red, but On The Beach finished slightly higher after a bad start.
Analyst Jamie Constable at broker N+1Singer, however, was sceptical of how much read-across there was for the rest of the sector, saying it 'ooked like management were "kitchen sinking the numbers (again)".
He added: "Is there read across to Tui? Well Tui updated on their year end to September at the end of September saying performance was in-line with expectations."
Housebuilders also retreated amid worries about Brexit, with Barratt, Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and Berkeley Group all in the red.
Theresa May's chances of getting her deal through parliament took a blow as President Donald Trump weighed in, sayingthe current deal could threaten a UK-US trade deal. Specifically Trump stated: "Right now if you look at the deal, [the UK] may not be able to trade with us. And that wouldn't be a good thing. I don't think they meant that."
