Musk's Boring Company unveils solution to LA traffic congestion
Elon Musk and his Boring Company unveiled on Wednesday a prototype for an underground high-speed transport tunnel designed to solve the traffic congestion in Los Angeles.
The prototype tunnel is only a mile (1.6km) long at the moment, costing $10m, but Musk intends to build a network under the city where modified electric cars would be lowered into and travel speeds could reach up to 150mph to ease traffic congestion.
"There is a path to alleviate traffic congestion in cities," Musk explained in meeting with reporters. "We’re not saying stop all other solutions. We’re saying this is a solution that will actually work.”
Musk said that costs could be as little as $1 per passenger and the system would be safe since all the vehicles would be autonomous to reduce the risk of crashing into each other.
Nevertheless the project still raises doubts since tunnelling is complicated, amid concerns over oil or natural gas pockets and changing geology in the earthquake-prone region.
