Over 17,000 Amazon employees, as well as more than 20,000 seasonal holiday employees will benefit from the new, higher pay effective on 1 November.
"We're excited to announce Amazon is raising our minimum wage for all full-time, part-time, seasonal, and temporary UK employees," said Doug Gurr, Amazon VP and UK Country Manager. "This will impact more than 37,000 employees across the country, resulting in higher pay for them and their families."
The employees will continue to receive the industry’s leading benefits, including a comprehensive benefits package (medical insurance, life assurance and income protection), paid breaks, company pension plans, funding for adult education and training to improve career skills.
The company also announced a raise in its minimum wage for all US workers. The increase applies to more than 250,000 current employees along with 100,000 more seasonal workers who will be hired over the holidays.
The announcement came as the retail giant was under scrutiny regarding worker conditions and low wages.
"We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead," said Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos in the statement. "We're excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us."
