EU considers measures to curb CO2 emissions from vehicles
The European Union is trying to reach a compromise on how harsh measures to curb CO2 emissions from vehicles should be to reach 2030 targets.
Representatives of lawmakers in the European Parliament of the 28 EU countries held several rounds of talks with the European Commission but failed to find a common ground on Tuesday, Reuters reported, as car-producing countries and more environmentally conscious lawmakers could not find a compromise.
Countries such as Germany which is the EU’s biggest carmaker are worried that these new measures could affect the industry and cost jobs.
The EU initially proposed a decline of 30% by 2030 of CO2 emissions, compared to 2021 levels but that target was raised to 35% by 2025. European Parliament lawmakers in October voted for another raise and the target was set for 40% reduction.
The transport sector is the only industry in which emissions are still rising instead of reducing which could mean Europe does not meet its targets to prevent climate change.
