O'Connor joined Tesla from Apple in March 2015 and his resignation follows a list of recent exits by senior executives, including Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton and Chief People Officer Gabrielle Toledano.
The company also said last week that its vice president of worldwide finance and operations Justin McAnear, would leave the company in early October.
The exodus of top executives comes at a time when the company is suffering due to a series of missteps from CEO Elon Musk and recent production problems with the Model 3 vehicle.
The company is currently facing probes from the US Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission after Musk tweeted he was considering taking Tesla private.
Musk assured that "funding was secured" and later said he had negotiated with a Saudi Arabia wealth fund that was interested in taking Tesla private.
The CEO has also been sued by a diver who volunteered to save trapped children in a cave in Thailand after he called him a "pedo".
More recently, Musk was involved in a controversy after he smoked marijuana on live radio.
