Facebook to create 800 new jobs in London
US social media giant Facebook is to create 800 new jobs in London with the establishment of a new engineering hub in the capital.
The new office will be the company’s largest engineering centre outside of the US, and will take its total employees in London to over 2,300.
The office officially opened on Monday in Rathbone Place, and the UK’s tech sector will receive a welcome boost as many international businesses grapple with the impending departure of the UK from the EU.
Nicola Mendelsohn, vice president for Facebook Europe, Middle East and Asia, said the announcement showed that Facebook “is more committed than ever to the UK”.
“The UK’s flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystem and international reputation for engineering excellence makes it one of the best places in the world to build a tech company,” she added.
Chancellor Philip Hammond spoke at the opening of the new offices on Monday, saying it was a “sign of confidence” in the UK economy.
“It’s a sign of confidence in our country that innovative companies like Facebook invest here, and it’s terrific news that they will be hiring 800 more highly skilled workers next year,” Hammond said.
